Questions About Judaism

Is Jesus the Messiah that the Jews are waiting for?

The Old Testament points to a coming Messiah and the New Testament reveals the Messiah as Jesus. This is not something that is made up but rather confirmed by the Bible in numerous passages of scripture. We are outlining below the connection between Old Testament Prophecy of the Messiah and the New Testament fulfillment of that prophecy. Please also read our section on "Accuracy of the Bible" where we make it known that the Bible has 1,800 prophecies (predictions) of which 1,700 have already come true. The Bible is accurate, in all that it says and it points to Jesus as being the Messiah.

In the table below we list the Bible passages and references, and there is so much more than we have on this page.

The Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem.

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Micah 5:2

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans[a] of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."

New Testament Fulfillment: Matthew 2:1-6; Luke 2:1-20

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:

"'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.

The Messiah was to be born of a Virgin.

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you[a] a sign: The virgin[b] will conceive and give birth to a son, and[c] will call him Immanuel.

New Covenant Fulfillment: Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[a]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[b] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"[d] (which means "God with us").

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

The Messiah was to be a prophet like unto Moses.

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Deuteronomy 18:15, 18, 19

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, "Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die."

The Lord said to me: "What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.

New Covenant Fulfillment: Acts 3:22-26

For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.'

"Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets who have spoken have foretold these days. And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, 'Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.' When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways."

The Messiah was to enter Jerusalem in triumph.

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

New Covenant Fulfillment. Matthew 21:1-9

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away."

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

"Say to Daughter Zion,
'See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"[a]
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

"Hosanna[b] to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"[c]
"Hosanna[d] in the highest heaven!"

The Messiah was to be silent before his accusers.

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.

New Covenant Fulfillment. Matthew 27:1-2

When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?" But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

The Messiah was to be raised from the dead

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Psalm 16:10

because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful[a] one see decay.

New Covenant Fulfillment. Mark 16:1-8

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'"

The Messiah is now at God's right hand.

Old Testament Prophecy Bible Reference: Psalm 110:1

The Lord says to my lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."

New Covenant Fulfillment. Mark 16:19

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

These are just a few selected connections between the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah and the New Testament Fulfillment. There are many more. These are not made by men but the inspired word of God.

What did Jesus say about himself?

Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires? Jesus Answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." John 6:28-29

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. John 14:23

If you want to know the Messiah, I urge you to read the New Testament and pray to God to open your heart and mind to His Truth.

Therefore Jesus said again, "Very truly I tell you,. … I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. … I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:7-10
